Student Performance

I went to the Art Gallery to look at the work students have done. I was highly impressed because I was drawn to a few pieces. There was a piece on which there was a person being pulled in four different directions. I can relate to the picture because I constantly feel stretched out thin and being pulled into different directions of things I want to do and need to do. I also was drawn to another painting that was different shades of blue. It reminded me of the ocean and I have a special connection with the ocean so it was really soothing for me to see this painting.

Student Life Activity

I met the President of Latinos Unidos and she invited me, my boyfriend, and bestfriend to a meeting. We all have not missed at meeting and I am proud to be part of this club. At my highschool there were not any clubs like this or any that really celebrated cultural. I managed to keep my roots alive through my family and be aware of where I came from mostly through them since a great majortiy of my peers were caucasian. Latinos Unidos hosted a Dia de los Muertos Mass and it was very beautiful and touching. The mass was conducted in spanish and I could not remember the last time I went to a spanish speaking mass. The father gave a beautiful homily that was lighthearted and I spent a lot of time reflecting on. It was touching for me to experience this because as I was starting college the two things I did not want to loose sense of that I was scared to loose were my culture and my religion. This mass really reinforced me not to forget where I come from and gave me a great sense of unity.

Guest Speaker

I was intrigued by the guest speaker Rose Jacobs Gibson because she was a city councilmember. I have done a lot of campaigning for city councilmembers so I was excited that one came to speak to us. She was very inspirational because she faced many obstacles in life and had to juggle many things yet she still managed to serve as mayor twice, get Woman of the Year, and turn a high crime rte city to "City on the Move." She reminded me of the work I have done as a canvasser and campaigner for local politicians in my community because they tackled similar issues and it was always a very good feeling when they kept their promises in making the community we lived in better.

Engagement Day

On the first day when we met the ACLU and Professor Lopez I was very eager and excited. I felt as if I were in a classroom with people who for the first time were all passionate about something I was extremely passionate about. I knew I had signed up for the right class when the opening song was "Get Up Stand Up" by Bob Marley. I have been a huge reggae fan my entire life and there are many bands and artists who deliver political statements in their music that are very empowering. The ACLU discussed many issues that I am passionate about and even gave a number of resources to be involved and to raise awareness. I also had felt a connection to Professor Lopez because I felt we were brought up the same way and had simialr views.

Call to Action Day

This year I participated on Call to Action day with the Art Therapy Freshman Seminar class. I volunteered to work with third graders from Roosevelt Elementary to produce art.  I specifically worked at a station that helped kids make bracelets and necklaces. I gave kids compliments and praised their artwork. It made me happy to see someone else happy for their work I was recognizing. This one little boy was quiet and timid while working on his necklace and when he was done, I made a big deal about his necklace and he smiled really huge. I loved the experience and would defintley do it again.
